One of New England's most unusual performing ensembles, the World Flute Trio presents solo and ensemble flute music that explores three different musical traditions. From the dance rhythms and emotional intensity of eastern European Klezmer music to the lilting and soaring melodies of Ireland to the meditative sounds of the Japanese bamboo shakuhachi, the World Flute Trio promises an evening that is as educational as it is mesmerizing. All three performers are recognized masters of their instruments who share a love of world music. In addition to solos, the Trio weaves some unique ensemble pieces out of the varying sonorities of their instruments and the sometimes surprising similarities of their musical traditions.
Phil Nyokai James has been composing and performing his music for over thirty years, both as a soloist and in collaboration with dancers and other performance artists. A licensed “shihan” (master) of the Japanese shakuhachi flute, he is one of only a few recognized American experts on this difficult instrument that’s known for its haunting sound and meditative depth. In 2002 his solo CD “First Places” was honored by Jazz Weekly as one of the best releases of 2002. Nyokai appears in concert throughout the United States and teaches privately in Boston and Portland. www.nyokai.com Carl Dimow has performed throughout the US, Europe and Central America. He appears with and does much of the arranging for the Casco Bay Tummlers klezmer band, who have been featured at festivals in Italy, Germany, Lithuania and Slovenia. Carl is noted for his use of extended techniques to create a unique klezmer flute sound. Klezmer music is East European Jewish folk music, originally played for weddings and other celebrations. It's been experiencing a world wide revival over the last thirty years. Carl is one of a handful of flutists who have been rediscovering a place for the flute in this tradition. A guitarist as well as flutist, he is a long time member of the Applied Music Faculty at Colby College and teaches privately in the Portland area. www.carldimow.com Nicole Rabata has appeared in concert throughout Europe and the United States on both classical flute and the wooden Irish traditional flute. Recent highlights include performances at the International Flute Festival of Lund, Sweden and the Magic Flute Festival in Stockholm. She has also appeared on BBC Glasgow and French National Television as part of a European tour with award-winning Irish group Devana. She completed her Master of Music degree and Artists’ Diploma in performance at Royal Northern College of Music in England in 2005 and now freelances and teaches in Portland as well as at Colby College. |
